AGS Tutorial Comments

We want all AGS students to know that you are important to us.

Please read all of the information on each post as there is important information that we have added to help maintain this Library Tutorial.

After viewing the entire blog, please make comments so that we can know where we need to make improvements. You may leave comments on any of the posts on this blog, not just the Tutorial post.

When leaving a comment, please leave your cohort number.

Library Trifold Handouts for AGS Students

At the beginning of the program, all AGS students should receive a trifold handout that gives information on the library services available. Please do not dispose of this handout. This document contains valuable information, including the usernames and passwords to the OWU Library's databases. We ask that students do not share these passwords with individuals that are not students at OWU. These are subcription databases and we want to honor the vendors' requirements concerning their usage.

After you have viewed the AGS Library Tutorial below, please contact us at elib@okwu.edu or (888) 279-4536 with any questions or comments. We also encourage you to leave comments about this blog's presentation on this website, so that we know how to better meet our patrons' needs in the future.

If you did not receive a copy of the blue trifold, please contact us and we will email you a copy.

AGS Library Tutorial with Audio Commentary

The new and improved AGS Library Tutorial with commentary, by Stephanie Leupp, the OkWU Off Campus Services Librarian, is now here! Please view the video below. We also encourage you to view the information below the video for additional supplemental materials that are not included in the video presentation.

The Oklahoma Wesleyan University Library is currently housed in the La Quinta Mansion, built by oil baron, H.V. Foster during the 1930s. Please view the official OkWU Library blog to see pictures of the construction of our future facility, the Janice and Charles Drake Library.

This presentation is designed to help make off campus OkWU students aware of the resources that are available for their educational needs. Please use telephone numbers and email addresses listed above to contact the Off Campus Services librarians at OkWU.

To access the Library's homepage, visit www.okwueagle.com/library.

Each of the links above offers valuable resources that may be beneficial for your research needs.
  • Visit the blog often to see what is new.
  • The OkWU Library Catalog offers information about books that you may either pick up at the library, or we can mail to you.
  • The NetLibrary contains e-books in many subject areas.
  • Click on the Online Research Databases link to view all of the databases available at OkWU.

The Portal includes links to many scholarly and reliable websites, including nursing theory and business resources.

All of the online research databases are available both on and off campus. Database use on campus does not require a username and password. Current off campus students, faculty, and staff may contact the Library for off-campus access to these resources. Please email the Off Campus Services librarians at elib@okwu.edu for the usernames and passwords. These passwords are also included in the trifold handout that you received during your orientation. We ask that you do not share these with others as the databases are to be used only by students, faculty and staff.

Below is a list and a brief summary of each of the databases that are available through the Library.
  • EBSCOhost provides several databases with thousands of citations and full text periodical articles available through the OkWU library.

  • Gale/Cengage includes three databases: the Health and WellnessResource Center and Nursing Resource Center databases contain many full text nursing-related resources. The Literary Resource Center contains biographical resources and literary criticism on authors of many disciplines and time periods.

  • FirstSearch includes several large databases that index periodicals and other materials in specialized areas.
  • CPI Online (Christian Periodical Index Online) indexes over 100 publications from a broad spectrum of knowledge including science, literature, medicine, music, philosophy, history, sociology, nursing, and education. This database will soon be moving to the EBSCOHost database package.
  • SIRS Knowledge Source provides access to selected full text articles from over 1500 periodicals and internet resources.

  • CQ Researcher is a comprehensive database providing full text information on current news topics.
  • Newsbank includes citations and full text articles from over 500 international and national newspapers, wire services, and broadcasts since 1991.

  • Mergent Online is a powerful business database with national and international company data and archives, annual reports, fact sheets, and a great deal more relevant information available for printing.

EBSCOHost is the OkWU Library's primary database package containing information on a variety of multidisciplinary topics.

Hover over the images or the magnifying glass/page icons to view citation and abstract information about individual articles.

EBSCOHost will list your citations in the format you desire, including APA and MLA.

If articles are not in full text in the database, you may email the citations to the librarians for retrieval. The OkWU library subscribes to many periodical titles that are not in full text in the databases.

Gale/Cengage has three databases that off campus students may find useful, including two nursing databases.

The Nursing Resource Center includes information on NIC, NOC, and NANDA.

You may also email citations from this database.

Please email the librarians for assistance in locating these resources as the Literature Resource Center's email feature does not work correctly.

Mergent Online is a business database that offers many valuable resources in full text.

WEBSITE EVALUATION

When visiting websites, like the links from Google and Yahoo, remember to look critically at the information to be sure that it is authoritative and correct. Don't believe everything you see on the Internet! Below is a checklist to help you determine whether or not a website is reliable and accurate:
  • Are there typing/grammar errors on the page?
  • Has a specific person/organization taken credit for the creation of the page?
  • Does the page indicate when it was created?
  • Is the information current?
  • Can the data be verified in another resource?
  • Is there a bias evident in the information on the page?
  • Is the information true?
  • Is the information the original work of the author/creator? Was it plagiarized?
  • Does the information contradict information that you found somewhere else?

We look forward to serving you. Please contact us if you have any questions about this presentation or the Library services at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
